Google "Google TV Announcement"

May 19, 2010

If you google the phrase “Google TV” you will find that the announcement around the mysterious device is apparently tomorrow at their I/O Developer conference.  It’s expected that Google will be making the announcement with Sony and Logitech and will call it “Smart TV”.  It will be interesting to see if they are offering a set top box or something that is integrated into the TV hardware itself.  Google has probably chosen this forum to make the announcement to attract developers to create applications for their TV platform.

It would be a game changer is if this platform included a way to record live TV (TiVo like functionality).  Set top boxes such as AppleTV have not had wide market penetration since they lack this ability (or talk to anything outside Appleland).  Recording live TV would go against the Apple’s revenue model of pay as you go (yes you will have to pay to watch an episode of Hell’s Kitchen).

When someone can finally give me EVERY MOVIE available at the touch of my lazy hand, I will be happy. Sounds promising.

The way google lays it out it appears this is their goal. However, the devil is in the details. I really wonder if they will have access to hulu (other set top boxes such as Boxee have been shutoff).

As for movies themselves it will be interesting to see what we will have to pay. Will they be able to work with on-demand when they integrate with your cable box? Will they try to undercut iTunes prices (the studios may not like that). All will be revealed in time….
