Apple TV Opens Up

The New York Times today had the latest scoop on Apple’s moves to dominate television.  The article speculates how Apple is looking to update the hardware, software and UI of Apple TV including a potential move to iOS.   This move would indicate that Apple would allow the device to be more than just an iTunes extender or as Steve Jobs likes to say “a hobby”.

    There's been a lot of chatter on the MythTV and XBMC forums that the next AppleTV will be most likely using the Broadcom CrystalHD chip (More info at I've got one wedged into an old Core duo iMac and with the latest SVN of XBMC it renders 1080p H.264 beautifully.

    Yep, it's just a question of when at this point. The one disappointing spec is that it may only do 720P. No mention on sound quality. Compromises like this will keep some of the market alive for blu-ray. But like the iPod downsampled songs, most folks may be ok with video & audio that is good but not great.
