Battlestar Galactica Blu-Ray Review

September 19, 2010
I don’t own too many complete series but I recently purchased Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series on blu-ray.  Battlestar Galactica is one of the best sci-fi shows ever made.  Much more than just a remake of the original, the show addressed many of the issues raised in a post-September 11th world.  My review follows.

This set is not plagued by the packaging problems of the earlier blu-ray sets, one of which featured a collectible cylon.  Complaints also abounded about no episode list and missing content.  Well, while this set does not include the cylon, it does address the aforementioned sins.

The set includes the mini-series, seasons one through four as well as the extended version of Razor (in the season 4 box) and the Plan.  The webisodes for “The Resistance” are also included.  There are also several extended episodes scattered throughout the discs.  There are tons of extras scattered throughout the discs such as video blogs, audio commentary and specials.  Since obtaining the set, I have watched the opening mini-series, 33, Exodus, the extended version of Unfinished Business and the Plan.  Even though “33″ is first episode of the regular series, it’s one of the best episodes I have ever seen of any sci-fi series.  The extended versions of Unfinished Business and Pegasus offer some good back story.  The Plan is not Galactica at its best, it felt more like watching a long string of deleted scenes, but it’s still worth watching.

Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series [Blu-ray]
Blu-ray BSG just $150 at Amazon!

Trust me, BSG never looked this good on TV.   The series was filmed in high definition and it realizes its full potential on blu-ray.  As I watched the mini-series, I could now see the texture of the Colonial uniforms and the true risque look of Number 6′s outfit when she is on Caprica.  The worn down, aged look of Galactica’s command center and crew quarters are easier to see as well.  And the audio is top notch.  It will give your surround sound system a complete workout.  The series music by Bear McCreary is outstanding in its own right for its variety of music genres it mixes together.  The primitive percussion themes will make you happy that you bought a subwoofer.

This is one of the best sci-fi shows every made and it’s worth watching it again on blu-ray given all of the extra footage included.  Amazon is now offering it at the low price of $149 versus the regular price of $299.  What are you waiting for?
