Last week, a major update was quietly released for Apple TV (sans Steve Jobs keynote). After the update was done, Apple TV started up and the Hub immediately started enjoying some of the new functionality. Tonight, I power cycled the unit and the following appeared on the screen:

What a nice little summary. Welcome to version 4.2 (2060) of Apple TV! The addition of Dolby Digital 5.1 to the Netflix client was the most exciting update for the Hub. The only things now missing from Apple’s Netflix client are closed captioning and 1080P support. However, it’s probably unlikely we will see 1080P support with this version of the Apple TV hardware.

The addition of MLB and NBA apps were also welcomed. I especially like that game summaries are displayed on the top of the screen when browsing Apple TV’s main menu.
There was little coverage in the blogosphere around two other enhancements: the updated keyboard which is easier to use as well as the new slideshow themes
This is a fairly impressive update to Apple TV. It makes the Hub think that the Apple TV app store may be available in the near future (2011). If not, the Apple TV is still a winner if they keep adding high quality apps like this.
