With the Playstation network being down, you’re robbed of the best audio and video experience Netflix can offer: 1080P and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. What devices offer the best alternatives? Unfortunately, only the Playstation 3 offers a 1080P Netflix video stream. There’s apparently an exclusive arrangement between Sony and Netflix. All of the other devices that deliver Netflix content in HD provide it in 720P. Recently, several devices also now offer Dolby Digital including Apple TV
and Panasonic’s 2011 blu-ray players (DMP-BDT210
and DMP-BDT110
) (The WD TV Live Hub
and WD Live Plus can also do it). Boxee is working on adding it as well but it’s not avaiable yet. Do you know of other Netflix devices that offer both HD and Dolby Digital?

Update (5/15): The Playstation network is up and running again in the Northeastern US (other regions are coming on-line as I write this). You will have to update your PS3 first. When you go to sign in, it will send you an email to reset your password. For me, it took about thirty minutes to receive the message. Once the password is reset, your good to go. Glad to see that Netflix is working and that I can watch movies in 1080P again. More info on the PSN restoration here.

It shouldn't be but it is. Apparently, Sony did it so they could track how many people used Netflix on the PS3
Why is Netflix tied to Playstation Network in the first place
Thanks At0msk313. A lot of folks have reported this hasn't worked for them. I tried it on my own PS3 and it did work but I had to try to sign in and/or cancel many times. Earlier in the week, I would always get past the prompts but it would get stuck when the show started to stream. Success may depend on which Netflix client is running on the PS3 (several are out there). Or it could just be plain persistence. Regardless, its an annoying experience.
Netflix still works.
