Recently, the Hub highlighted the Broadband Device Pavilion at the Streaming Media East conference. Over twenty different streaming blu-ray players, video game consoles and streaming boxes were in one place for hands-on comparisons. Streaming Media has posted a comparative matrix of the technical specs and content providers available on all of the devices presented. Some things to keep in mind when reading the matrix:
Pricing: All of the prices stated are manufacturer’s suggested retail prices. In reality, you can get several of the boxes for less at Amazon or other on-line retailers. The Logitech Revue is currently available on Amazon for $216.
Feature Shift: Every time you blink, there’s a functionality update to one of these boxes. For example, Hulu Plus was recently added to the TiVo Premier. Less often, functionality is lost due to a disagreement between content and hardware providers.
Experience: One thing that is not captured on the matrix is the user experience which is subjective. For many consumers, the consistent user-interface of the Apple TV is easier to use than the hodge-podge of content user-interfaces found on some of the other boxes.
