Father’s Day Gift Ideas

June 13, 2011

So, are you still trying to figure out what to get for Dad for Father’s Day this Sunday? If he’s someone who loves gadgets, here’s a few suggestions:

iPad: The iPad is great when it comes to consuming media: Books, magazines, Netflix, music, you get the picture. But there’s so many options now: If Dad has a big MP3 music collection, at least go for the 32 GB model. If Dad spends a lot of time commuting on the train or bus, 3G is a great option so he can connect to the Internet. Black or white probably depends on what’s in stock. If you want to connect your iPad to your TV, don’t forget the Digital AV Adapter (if you have an Apple TV you won’t need this).

TiVo Premier: The Hub recently got the TiVo Premier and we’re very happy with it. A digital video recorder (DVR) that can record over forty hours of HD TV with a number of streaming services: Netflix, Amazon Instant, Hulu Plus and Pandora. The TiVo has the ability to stream your photos and music from your computer. It’s one of those gadgets that just works (except if you have satellite where it can’t). TiVo is offering a Father’s Day deal for a $0 Premier with monthly service for $20 a month (2 year commitment) through the end of today. Alternatively, you could buy the box from Amazon for $85 and purchase product Lifetime service for $399 (use coupon code PLSR).

Apple TV $98: Simple yet elegant. If you’re looking for the easiest way to stream your mega iTunes collection to your TV, this is it. Apple TV also has one of the best Netflix interfaces out there. Yes, it doesn’t have a laundry list of features but everything it does, it does well.

Roku XDS: The streaming box with the widest selection of content channels including Netflix. Best Amazon Instant video player available. It works with any TV and stereo system. Only disadvantage is that it cannot stream media stored on your network.

Panasonic DMP-BDT210: Our favorite blu-ray player from this year’s models. It’s one of the few boxes on the market to have Netflix, Amazon Instant and VUDU. With its fast load times, it’s also a great blu-ray player too!  Best Buy is also selling a number of blu-rays for $5.99 including Total Recall and Running Man. Newer titles such as Tron Legacy and True Grit are on sale for $18.

Last but not least, don’t forget the HDMI cable so Dad can connect his new gadget to the TV. With the exception of the TiVo, none of them include it. Happy Father’s Day!

Love your recommendations! I got my Dad an iPad 2 and a Sling Adapter to go along with it for this upcoming Father's Day. I know he's going to love it! He'll be able to hook up the Sling Adapter to his DISH Network (our TV provider/my employer) equipment at home and download the free DISH Remote Access app to his new iPad and not only browse his TV guide and schedule recordings, but he'll also be able to watch all his subscribed programming via the pad anywhere he goes in the world on 3G or WiFi. It's pretty cool; I've had one for a while now and love it! Plus DISH has a promo going on to customers who purchase one now that can get a rebate back for it. Check it out http://goo.gl/Qsggz. :)
