Where is HBO Go in the Samsung App Store?

Back in the beginning of August, we wrote that the HBO Go app for Samsung devices was coming “soon”. Well, as the end of September approaches, there’s been no sign of the app. While we realize that “soon” is a subjective term (especially in the world of software development), we thought it was time to update our readers on what we do know.

To recap, HBO and Samsung put out a joint-release last March announcing the app. When we originally heard about the app shipping soon, the source also mentioned that HBO Go was already available on some of the newer Samsung TVs and Blu-ray players. In particular, the Samsung HDTVs (UNxxD7000 and 8000 series) and BD-D6500 Blu-ray Player ship with fully functional web browsers that will access HBO Go today (since they have flash support).

After doing some research, we’ve also learned that HBO itself is responsible for creating the app, not Samsung. We’ve also found out that when HBO Go hits the Samsung app store, it will potentially work on other Samsung devices such as smart phones and tablets.

Yesterday, GigaOM revealed a survey HBO provided to its customers. In this survey, HBO asked which devices customers would like to see HBO Go on next. A number of devices were specifically mentioned such as the Roku, Xbox, Playstation3 and Apple TV. There were also choices for connected TVs and Blu-ray players. While there was no specific mention of Samsung, we’ve been told by HBO not to read into this. There is still going to be a HBO Go app in the Samsung App store. HBO has not provided any specific timeline to us. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know something.

What’s also interesting is what devices were not mentioned. I guess we won’t be seeing HBO Go on TiVo or the WD Live boxes anytime soon. Remember, HBO Go is already available on Google TV and Boxee today.

Update: Since we wrote the story, HBO Go is now available on the Roku. See the link below for our test drive of the service.

Update ( 2/16/2012): It’s here! At least for select 2010 and 2011 Samsung Smart TVs, HBO GO is available.

I have the samsung 7000 with full web browser. I can pull up HBO Go but when I try to watch a show it says “optimizing video” but never starts.

    Anyone know why?

    thanks
