Sons of Anarchy Season 5: Where to Watch, Download or Stream?

Tonight, Sons of Anarchy Season 5 premieres on FX at 10 PM EST. So, usually, this is the part of the post where I tell you the ways you can stream or download episodes. Well, Sons of Anarchy season 5 is missing in action on streaming services at the moment. There’s been no sign of season 5 on either iTunes or Amazon Instant Video. Is this one of Clay’s plots to hold back progress or simply drive cable sign-ups? More likely, the season 5 premiere will simply appear in the morning. However, it should be noted that other shows including Doctor Who were available for pre-order a couple of weeks before their premiere. Update (9/12): SOA is still missing on iTunes and Amazon. There’s been no response from the PR folks yet either. It’s unclear if it’s just delayed or if this is a new strategy for FX. Not distributing via streaming video could be a way to increase cable subscriptions or DVD sales. It may also increase illegal downloads of the show.

Update 2 (9/12)  The premiere episode, Sovereign, is now on Amazon Instant Video as of this afternoon. As far as iTunes goes, there’s apparently a dispute between FX and Apple. Kurt Sutter tweeted out a blog post earlier today about the situation. However, his blog post (“Hey there’s an Apple up my ass and it hurts”) detailing the Apple – Fox /FX dispute was removed as was the tweet. The post from Sutter and another source told us that Apple has required that all TV shows have all network branding or identification removed for iTunes.  Specifically, the bug in the lower right hand corner and the brief intro at the beginning and end of the episode. FX has apparently not agreed and no SOA is the result.

Update 3 (9/14):  It’s available on iTunes. It’s unclear how the dispute was resolved. Please share in the comments if you purchase it from iTunes and let us know if there’s any FX branding.

If you’re looking to catch up on season 4, it’s available on both Amazon Instant Video and iTunes. Seasons 1 through 3 are available on all you can watch streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video. If you’re wondering when SOA season 4 will be available on Netflix and Amazon Prime, it probably won’t be till the end of the year. Season 3 appeared on Netflix and Amazon at the end of last year, after season 4 had finished. Update (10/29/12): SOA Season 4 is now available on both Netflix and Amazon Prime Streaming.

I’m looking forward to this season. There’s a number of new cast members including Jimmy Smits and Ashley Tisdale. To get you pumped up for the premiere, I’ve added a couple of the season 5 teasers to the bottom of the post as a behind the scenes video, “Before the Anarchy”.

Update (11/2/12): If you were effected by Hurricane Sandy and unable to see this week’s episode, SOA creator Kurt Sutter will get the episode to you.  To get the episode, Sutter says, “East coast soa fans send me your sandy troubles to wtfsandy2012@gmail.com and we will see about getting you a copy of 508 from last week. stay whole. we love you.”

It’s probably going to be almost a year before we see Sons of Anarchy Season 5 on Netflix. The only legit option until then is to follow the links above to purchase it on Amazon Instant Video or iTunes. It’s also on VUDU too.

Does VUDU need you to subscribe to it and does it cost money?

No subscription for VUDU (like Amazon and iTunes). But you do have to pay for episodes. All of the services usually have a discount if you buy an entire season.
